Join published children’s author Angie Belcher for a practical, inspiring three-hour workshop exploring what makes a great children’s picture book. Angie is the author of a number of children’s books, including her recent titles Boil Up and Pipi Dance, and brings both her experience as a published writer and her passion for storytelling to this hands-on session. Whether you have an idea you’ve been carrying around for years, a manuscript already underway, or simply want to understand how picture books are created, this workshop will help you turn your ideas into a story that works. What you’ll learn:

1. Finding ideas and deciding whether they’re workable.

2. Understanding the key elements of a great picture book.

3. Developing character, setting, plot, pitch and pace.

4. Exploring different story structures and finding the best fit for your idea.

5. Playing with the language of picture books, including rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, assonance and onomatopoeia.

6. Using mentor and comparative texts to strengthen your writing.

7. What to do with your completed manuscript, including submissions, competitions and other opportunities
